How Can We Improve the Cyber Sales Cycle?
The cybersecurity sales process is so terribly inefficient. And everyone, the targets and cybersecurity leaders, are losing valuable time because of that inefficiency. Where can we start making improvements?Check out this post for the discussion that's the basis for this podcast episode. This week’s Defense in Depth is hosted by me, David Spark, producer, CISO Series. Our guest co-host is John Overbaugh, CISO, ASG. John and I welcome our guest, Jerich Beason, commercial CISO, CapitalOne. We discussed the following:We just want to be part of the conversation when seeking a solution. The most common concern I hear from security vendors is “We have this awesome product, and nobody knows we exist.” Everyone wants to be considered, but with thousands of vendors in the market, recognition requires huge budgets for marketing or placement in industry reports. Something startups just don’t have, noted Chris McNeill of Infinite Converge Solutions. You simply can’t fast track relations in security. It requires building relationships and trust. “An attraction campaign,” recommends Tim Howard of Fortify Experts, who invests in content marketing and hosting leadership forums to build relationships. Justin Perron of 13 Layers leans on LinkedIn to build true relationships. “That requires active listening, caring enough to really help, getting to know the other person, giving in addition to asking, and being patient, " said Perron.Find a VAR you trust and then you don’t have to deal with vendors directly. A value-added reseller (VAR) is tasked with finding solutions that work for their clients. If you find a VAR that knows the vendor space (and you trust), you can eliminate the wasted time of searching and evaluating, said Ray Harrison of Abira Security. Similarly, Max Mason of Arctic Wolf argues that the solution to remove wasted effort in the sales cycle is to distribute ALL products though the channels of VARs, MSPs, and consultants. It’s your job to find solutions and that requires meeting with vendors. In a rather saucy response, Stephan Little of Zero Limits Ventures had a “do your job” response. “Meet with vendors. share the challenges you have and listen to the innovative ways they can help YOU solve YOUR problem,” said Little. Please listen to the full episode on your favorite podcast app, or over on our blog where you can read the full transcript.
