How to Improve Your Relationship With Your Boss
Just like getting a job, advancing your career requires more than just technical skills. It requires you to build relationships within your organizations, particularly with your boss. So how can you consciously build these relationships with an eye to leveling up your career?
Check out this post from Monte Pedersen of The CDA Group for the discussion that is the basis of our conversation on this week’s episode co-hosted by me, David Spark, the producer of CISO Series, and Geoff Belknap, CISO, LinkedIn. Joining us is our guest Jerry Davis, division director for cyber defense, Truist Bank.
You don’t get to choose your manager, but you can choose to build a relationship
Viewing a manager in terms of what they impose on you denies the possibility of building a relationship with them. Vinita Bansal of techtello reminds us that this isn’t a one-way street, saying, "Treat your relationship with your manager as a partnership. When you manage up well, your boss has to do less managing down which frees up their time to do other parts of their job well." Part of this comes from realizing that managers aren’t just your boss, they answer to lots of other parties in your organization. "The best managers are 3-way managers. They know how to ‘manage down’ and motivate and support their teams, ‘manage sideways’ and build relationships with peers, and ‘manage up’ to develop an honest relationship with their boss," said Linda Goodman of LG Associates.
Your boss is the lens the organization sees you with
To grow within your organization, start with your boss. Understanding how they want to manage will allow you both to be successful. "If your direct boss does not see your value, nobody else will without your direct intervention. You need to understand how they work so you can be successful in the environment they live in," said Zachary Davis of CGI. Dave Edward notes that employees need to take an active stake in cultivating this relationship, saying, "Not many people take responsibility when it comes to managing their boss."
Enable leadership
Leadership doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Staff enables leadership, which in turn builds trust. "We need to help our leaders to be successful. This requires observing and building a trusted relationship. Being open and working closely with your boss is a great way to help them be successful and role model productive working relationships," said Jenny Miller, New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade. Kate Sotsenko of TheGoodBusy reminds us that leaders encourage their staff by keeping a learning mindset, saying, "If we want our teams to keep growing, we must lead the way. If they observe us learning, they will be investing in learning too."
Align your career with the organization
Articulate where you want your career to go. Don’t expect another rung on a ladder or set out a vision completely outside your job. Instead, talk to your boss about how your current position aligns with your career goals. "Strive for alignment between what the employee sees as their career vision and how the boss sees that vision aligning with the needs of the organization. This comes down to the employee having clarity and then transparent conversations on a regular basis with their leader," said Lisa Martin, The Coach-Like Leader™.
