Is Remote Work Helping or Hurting Cybersecurity?
Work from home flourished during the pandemic. Many workers love it and don't want to go back. Some organizations are pushing for a return to the office. Is in-office work necessary to improve productivity and cybersecurity posture?
Check out this post for the discussion that is the basis of our conversation on this week’s episode co-hosted by me, David Spark, the producer of CISO Series, and Geoff Belknap, CISO, LinkedIn. Joining us for the episode is our guest, Shawn Bowen, CISO, World Kinect Corporation.
Don’t get caught in the productivity time suck trap
One of the common reasons not to adopt remote work comes from concerns about productivity. But this neglects the fact that being in the office has its own productivity trade offs. "I arrived at 7am - to get 2 hours of productive time, but it never failed. Someone would come with a ‘drive by chat’ about a non-work thought,” said Jeff Reckseidler at Charles Schwab. Amy Hyatt at QuickNode found this is often more a problem of old school managers saying, "The location is not the problem. If you have disengaged or poor producers, YOU are the problem."
Remote work needs leadership support
"Successful work from home requires a mature approach to leadership that can trust and nurture your best talent," said Gill Reindl of GigaOm. The same workplaces that “don’t trust” remote work have almost certainly adopted remote technologies, using public cloud infrastructure or using a slew of SaaS apps. Chad Henderson of Security Consulting says this will leave employees wondering, “So technology can be great from anywhere, but people cannot?"
Companies can’t afford to miss the benefits of remote work
At its most basic level, remote work widens your talent pool. "Employers' access to talent might not be available without a flex schedule and remote work,” said John Norman of CDW. To paraphrase Adam Balderrama of RVO Health, remote work offers real benefits to top talent, like decreased commuting stress and overall work-life flexibility. Raymond Krehn of Homewatch CareGivers shared his view on where leadership should fall on the issue, saying, “My job is to remove obstacles that impede your job, and commuting can be an obstacle for many people.”
Remote work policy reflects how an organizations sees employees
While remote work gained a lot of attention after COVID lockdowns, it's really a reflection of larger organizational issues. "What people want is flexibility and to be trusted, the remote vs in-office debate dumbs down the real issue which is trust," said Paul Beavers of ManageAmerica. Trust in employees means more than investing in a one-size solution. "I love being in-person, but I strongly support remote work,” said Raymond Krehn of Homewatch CareGivers. The key is respecting employees enough to find options that can work for them.
