Cybersecurity Budgets

Cybersecurity Budgets

A fact-packed discussion this week on Defense in Depth as sponsored guest Nick Kakolowski, senior director of research at IANS Research joins me and co-host Geoff Belknap, CISO, LinkedIn. Give us your thoughts on these topics around cybersecurity budgets:Did COVID turn the cybersecurity awareness dial up to 11? If you weren't digitized before, COVID's work from home procedures forced all companies to make a FULL digital transformation. And with that, it's impossible to ignore. "Pretty much all major organizations and boards have realized the importance [of cybersecurity] and are focusing on cyber safety and increasing their budgets," said Channakeswara VUPPALAMARTHI of LinkedIn.Finance is struggling with the cloud as it moves expenses from CAPEX to OPEX. While the cloud has facilitated a lot of issues (like flexibility) and in many cases driven costs down, it's messing with finance and depreciation. As Kyle Thomas of WEX noted, "[Organizations] are actively working to reduce the reoccurring expenses in their budgets through tool and/or vendor consolidation and procurement practices."The OPEX expenditure is mostly going to people, not necessarily cloud services. Many services IT would normally handle are being procured directly by people in the business. This completely sidesteps the need for IT to spin up services. "As IT services become further decentralized, security teams get thinner trying to support them," said Jerich Beason, commercial CISO, Capital One. This is requiring more training, but it's paying off said Sean Cassidy of Asana, "We're seeing a huge ROI on training."Can't calculate cybersecurity budget as a percentage of any other budget. While many other departments determine their budget in this manner, it doesn't work for security. "There are plenty of ways to throw money at a problem and not solve anything," said Jonathan Waldrop at Insight Global. The decisions have to be strategic as to what the business is trying to accomplish.Listen to the show via your favorite podcast app, or head over to the blog post for this episode where you can not only listen, but also read the entire transcript.
